Josh Abbott Becomes the Voice of Dairy Queen Texas

Iconic burger joint Dairy Queen, often referred to as “The Texas Stop Sign,” has updated its classic jingle after 20 years. The Texas Dairy Queen Operators’ Council, a nonprofit organization made up of DQ franchisees operating in Texas, recently partnered with country singer and native Texan Josh Abbott to sing “That’s What I like About Texas“ as part of the new “No Place but Texas, Nobody But DQ” campaign.

Abbott grew up in Idalou and attended Texas Tech University, and has always been a fan of DQ. He even sings about the restaurant in his song “I’ll Sing About Mine.”

“As a native Texan, I am very familiar with the brand,” Abbott said in a press release. “As a kid, Dairy Queen restaurants were the place I went for a sweet treat or a Hungr-Buster or my favorite, steak fingers.”

Abbott also noted that there’s a big responsibility to stay true to the roots of the familiar jingle, but he added a banjo and fiddle to the new version to represent his sound.

While Dairy Queen was actually founded in Illinois, it’s been a Texas staple for 75 years, and there are now more DQs in Texas — nearly 600 — than in any other state.
